My Arts Practice
Ellen Appleby

For many years I have been interested in art and the environment, and the relationship between the environment and people. The idea of transformation is central to my art and aesthetic: as ideas change into form, as people change themselves and the environment, as places and relationships change people. These ideas are realized through the transformation of the substance of our earth, amazing clay, into beautiful collectable objects.

The tactile qualities of clay and its aesthetic potential appeal to my creative voice, and I enjoy the alchemy, challenges and unpredictability of the interaction of earth, fire and chemicals. Colour, form, shapes, textures, scale, fragility and strength are aspects that can be seen in my ceramics.
